The Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA) has condemned what it described as a \u201cserious escalation\u201d and \u201cgrave violations\u201d against some of its detained activists in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, accusing authorities of physical and psychological torture and ill-treatment in prison.
\nAccording to the organization, detainees are allegedly held in narrow cells with constant bright lighting, deprived of sleep, and subjected to verbal abuse, in violation of national laws and international standards on the treatment of prisoners.
\nIRA also highlighted the case of detainee Lemrabott Ould Mahmoud, stating that he suffers from severe kidney pain and has allegedly been denied medical care despite his advanced age, holding authorities responsible for any deterioration in his condition.
\nThe statement further referred to alleged pressure on two female detainees, Fatimata Lalla and Rachida, in connection with a slavery-related case.
