UN Delegation Visits the Port of Nouakchott to Review Its Role in Supporting Economic Development

The Director General of the Port of Nouakchott Autonomous Authority, Mr. El Mourabit Ould Benahi, received on Monday, February 2, 2026, a delegation from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), headed by Mr. Claver Gatete, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Commission, accompanied by Mauritania’s Ambassador to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Mr. El Houssein Ould Naji. The visit aimed to review the port’s capacities and its role in supporting economic development.
At the start of the visit, the delegation watched a presentation film highlighting the various stages of the port’s development, its infrastructure, and the services it provides. The delegation also attended a technical presentation delivered by the port’s Commercial Director, before conducting a field tour of several operational and lo
gistics facilities within the port.

During the visit, the delegation was briefed on the efforts made by the Port of Nouakchott Autonomous Authority and the pivotal role it plays in stimulating the national economy and enhancing trade exchanges, as the main gateway for foreign trade and a key component of the country’s economic system.
